◇ CMIR 10th Medical Conference on Integrative Medicine – the Future?

17-18 March 2007, Royal College of Physicians, London

The CMIR 10th conference on the “Integrative Medicine – The Future” was hailed as a milestone event for the development of integrative medicine. Many pioneering reports were delivered at the conference from speakers around the world. During the two days event at the Royal College of Physicians, the alchemy of passion and problems of integration were expressed and debated, giving a special international perspective to the urgency and necessity of integration and co-operation in medicine.

The conference was supported by World Health Organisation, State Administration of Chinese Medicine, China, Prince of Wales Foundation for Integrated Health, and many world leading medical and healthcare organisations, and was co-chaired by Dr. David Heymann, Deputy Director-General, WHO, Mr. David Tredinnick MP, Lord Aaron Kenneth Ward-Atherton and Prof. Man Fong Mei. During the roundtable forum important issues regarding the direction and content of integration were discussed. The debate on methodologies passionately expressed the current polarisation of evidence based medicine (EBM) and the holistic natural medicine represented by traditional medicine and CAM. The need for a new system methodology for a future integrated medicine is apparent. Concerted efforts of innovation are now need to bring about a new paradigm in medicine. Dialectical based medicine (DBM) was presented to provoke reactions from medical philosophers and academic experts present at the conference. As a result, Guangxi Medical University is now constructing a new faculty of integrative medicine based on the methodology of DBM. Professor Mei was appointed to chair this faculty.

Building on the momentum created by the event, many participants felt that an international group should be formed to promote and co-ordinate integration globally. (Please see below the announcement on the formation of the Global Medicine Forum)
